Motors are available in a variety of horsepower ranges from .25 Hp to 100 Hp motors. These high-quality industrial motors, unless otherwise stated, are rated for continuous operation in a 40°C ambient and for altitudes up to 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) above sea level.

How to choose a general purpose motor vs. an inverter-duty motor

General purpose motors have been around for many years. They are the workhorse of almost every industry. An inverter-duty motor is a much newer concept that was necessary as general purpose motors began to be driven by variable frequency drives (VFDs or inverters). An inverter-duty motor can withstand the higher voltage spikes produced by all VFDs (amplified at longer cable lengths) and can run at very slow speeds without overheating. This performance comes at a cost: inverter-duty motors can be much more expensive than general purpose motors.

Guidelines for choosing an Ironhorse general purpose motor vs. an inverter-duty motor are available below. If your application falls within the guidelines, there is no need to apply an inverter-duty motor.
NOTE: Marathon inverter-duty motors have limitations as well. Please see the Marathon section for more details.

In summary, general purpose motors can be run with drives in many applications; however inverter-duty motors are designed to handle much lower speeds without overheating and they are capable of withstanding higher voltage spikes without their insulation failing. With the increased performance comes an increase in cost. This additional cost can be worth it if you need greater performance.

• Most of the MicroMAX series motors are currently available as in-stock items and will ship the same day from AutomationDirect, but the larger non-stock motors that must ship via truck (Black Max, Blue Max and Blue Chip-XRI Series motors) will be drop-shipped from Marathon Electric (usually the same business day or within 24 hours).



• Motors with Encoders (Yxxx-A77x part numbers) are custom assembled and will drop-ship from Marathon Electric within 48-72 hours.

1. Due to weight restrictions, large motors must be shipped via truck and cannot be shipped to Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands.



2. "NEXT DAY" truck delivery options on motors are only available for a very limited number of in-stock items and are subject to regional limitations. Orders must be placed no later than 12:00pm (noon) Eastern time and... AN EXPEDITE FEE WILL BE CHARGED.



3. Saturday delivery is NOT available for motors that must ship via truck (ground service).



4. In-stock motors will typically ship the same day via the AutomationDirect preferred shipping provider.
